What is the Pre-Purchase Residential Building Inspector course?
It is an online course designed for building industry professionals who want to expand their careers into pre-purchase building inspections. It teaches students how to conduct thorough property inspections and write professional reports for clients, in line with Australian Standard AS4349.1.
How much does the course cost?
There are two pricing options are $1,195 payable upfront, or $695 payable upfront and weekly payments of $150 for 4 weeks
What are the entry requirements?
To enrol, you must hold either a Certificate IV in Building and Construction, a Diploma of Building and Construction or a Bachelor's Degree in Building
Is this course suitable for beginners?
No. This course is designed for people with experience in the building and construction industry. The minimum prerequisite is a Certificate IV in Building and Construction. If you live in Queensland, you must be a QBCC licensed builder with a minimum of 5 years experience as a licensed builder.
How long does the course take to complete?
Most students have work commitments while undertaking the course, therefore the average time to complete the course is about 4 to 6 weeks. The total estimated learning time is approximately 30 to 40 hours.
How long do I have access to the course?
Your course is valid for 6 months from the date of enrolment. You can apply for extensions beyond the 6-month expiry date, offered in 4-week blocks with a maximum of 2 extension periods. The cost of each extension period is $300.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered online throughout Australia via a cutting-edge, user-friendly Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS is web-based, so all you need is access to the internet. Learning material is delivered via e-learning booklets, so you can study at your own pace. There are no live tutorials or set times that you need to be available online.
Do I need advanced computer skills?
No. The online learning platform is built for any user level and guides you through each of the units you need to complete.
Does the course have a practical component?
Yes. You are required to complete two pre-purchase residential building inspections and submit the inspection reports for assessment. These inspections can be completed on your own home, a family member's home, or a friend's home. One of these properties should be a detached house. You will complete the inspections on your own, supervision is not required.

What qualification do I receive on completion?
You will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Is this course nationally accredited?
No. In Australia, there is no single nationally accredited qualification specifically titled 'Pre-Purchase Residential Building Inspector'. This is largely because of the different authority requirements depending on the state or territory you are planning to operate in.
Outside of Queensland, the regulators are largely the insurance companies. To qualify for professional indemnity insurance to undertake pre -purchase residential building inspections, students must have a minimum of a Certificate IV in Building and Construction with an number of years of building experience and the completion of our course.
In Queensland, you must be a licensed builder with a minimum of 5 years building experience. You are then required to complete our course and apply for a 'Completed Residential Building Inspectors License' with the QBCC.

Why must inspections comply with AS4349.1?
Anyone undertaking pre-purchase residential building inspections associated with the sale of a property in Australia must do so in accordance with Australian Standard AS4349.1. This is also a requirement of professional indemnity insurance companies. If you undertake pre-purchase inspections without following the Standard, you may not be covered by your professional indemnity policy should a claim arise against you.
