What is the Timber Pest Management course?

The Timber Pest Management course is a nationally accredited online program that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to inspect and treat timber pests. It incorporates units CPPUPM3008 and CPPUPM3010. Australian Inspector Training is accredited to deliver these units nationwide (Registered Training Organisation number 41516).

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone seeking to pursue a career in timber pest management as a pest management technician or timber pest inspector — whether you are just starting out or looking to enhance your existing skills. You do not need prior pest control experience. You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and be at least 16 years of age.

How much does the course cost?

There are two payment options. $1,495 payable upfront OR $695 upfront and then weekly payment of $225 per week over 4 weeks.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered in two distinct components:

Online learning modules — accessed through Australian Inspector Training's internet-based Learning Management System (LMS). Course content is provided via e-learning booklets. There are no set course times or live tutorials, so you can study at your own pace.
Practical (work placement) component — students must complete 10 timber pest treatments and 10 timber pest inspections under the supervision of a licensed Timber Pest Management Technician.

Students must complete both the online learning and practical components simultaneously (not one after the other). It is recommended that students commence the practical component immediately.

Is the course delivered 100% online??

No. While the theoretical learning is completed online, the performance criteria for this course requires a supervised practical component. Students must undertake a number of timber pest treatments and inspections with a licensed Timber Pest Management Technician as part of their assessment.

How long does the course take to complete?

You have 6 months from the day you enrol to complete the course. The online component takes approximately 60 hours to complete and the practical component takes approximately 40 hours — totalling around 100 hours of learning. Most students finish within 8 to 10 weeks.

What are the practical (work placement) requirements?

Students must complete 10 timber pest treatments and 10 timber pest inspections under the supervision of a licensed Timber Pest Management Technician. Students must also complete a report using AIT's software application and log and submit photographic and video evidence via the LMS for each of the 20 jobs.

Do I need to organise my own work placement?

Yes. Students are responsible for organising their own work placement supervisor (a licensed Timber Pest Management Technician). This must be arranged prior to enrolment.

AIT may be able to provide students with work placement supervision contacts if students are situated near Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Please keep in mind that AIT can not guarantee that the contacts provided will take on the students. It is up to the student to make contact and confirm their supervision. Please also keep in mind that there may be a fee payable to the work placement supervisor which can in the range of $1,200 to $1,500+GST. Students should confirm this arrangement directly with the supervisor or pest management company.

Do I need advanced computer skills to complete the course?

No. The online learning platform is built for any user level and guides students through each unit. Instructions are provided at the start of each learning module, and support is available by phone or email.

What qualification will I receive on completion?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units CPPUPM3008 and CPPUPM3010. This qualification is recognised across Australia.

Is this course nationally recognised?

Yes. This course includes nationally recognised units of competency and is accredited Australia-wide, making it a valid qualification for applying for a pest management technician licence in any state or territory.

How do I get my Pest Management Licence after completing the course?

After receiving your Statement of Attainment, you need to contact the licensing authority in your state or territory to apply for your pest management technician licence. Each state has its own authority and online application process:

• New South Wales: Service NSW

• Victoria: Department of Health Victoria

• Tasmania: NRE Tasmania

• South Australia: SA Health

• Western Australia: WA Health

• Northern Territory: NT Government

It is recommended you contact your relevant authority before enrolling to understand any additional local requirements.

Can I study from anywhere in Australia?

Yes. Because the theoretical component is delivered entirely online through the LMS, you can access course materials whenever and wherever suits you, as long as you have an internet connection. The practical component must be completed with a licensed technician in your area.
